The matcha craze has definitely conquered the city of Porto. From specialty cafes to brunch spots, the Japanese green drink has become a regular feature on the menus around Porto, whether as an alternative to coffee or as a small ritual of pleasure.
Here at IN, we have a matcha lover, a matcha and coffee lover, and a coffee lover who hasn't yet succumbed to the trendy drink. For those who don't drink coffee, like one of our INsiders, it's a wonderful option, it gives you that energy boost that only caffeine provides without having to drink coffee.
Just one sip is enough to realize that not all matchas are the same. The quality of the powder, the strength (ceremonial or not), the preparation method, and even the water temperature can transform the experience into a creamy, balanced, and vibrant matcha, or a bitter cup with too much "herb flavor".
If you're a matcha purist or just curious and looking for the best matcha latte to accompany your brunch, this article is for you. We explored the streets of Porto, visited popular cafes and less obvious discoveries to tell you, without filters, where it's really worth drinking matcha in the city.
Because when the matcha is good, it shows. And when it's not, it shows too.
Kiwa Café
Kiwa Café is one of the strongest names, if not the strongest, when it comes to matcha in Porto.
At Kiwa, matcha is treated seriously; it's ceremonial grade, sourced directly from Japan, and its preparation is meticulous. It's also one of the few places where you can find Hojicha (matcha's sibling) on the menu.
Hojicha is roasted green tea with a nutty flavor and low caffeine content, unlike matcha, which is ground into a vibrant green powder, offering an intense flavor and a higher caffeine content.
It's the ideal place for both purists and those who enjoy more creative versions, as it also offers matcha-based desserts in addition to drinks.
From the space to the staff, everything at Kiwa is very welcoming; it's a must-visit for all matcha lovers.

The Coffee
The best of Brazilian coffee, combined with the purity and perfectionism of Japan.
The Coffee is known for its attention to detail and consistency, and this is evident in its matcha. It's usually well-balanced, with a creamy texture and not overly sweet. Even better is the fact that you can customize your matcha, you can change not only the milk, but also choose the amount of matcha and the temperature.
There are also several seasonal drinks. In the summer, there are usually more iced matcha options with fruit. The only one that's always available is the typical ichigo matcha, which combines matcha and strawberry.
It's a safe bet for those looking for a "clean" and high-quality matcha in the center of Porto, and all The Coffee locations are highly Instagrammable spots.

CA Downtown
CA Downtown is a modern and relaxed space, perfect for brunch. It has delicious dishes and a variety of matcha flavors that go beyond what we're used to.
The matcha is quite good, but if they had opted for a matcha latte or those matcha flavors we're all used to, it probably wouldn't be a memorable matcha or stand out compared to others.
However, the wide variety and different ingredients, like banana pudding and pistachio, have put CA Downtown on the map of our favorite matcha spots in Porto.
It's a good option for a great brunch and to swap your coffee for something green and sweet.

Porto may not be Kyoto, but it's becoming increasingly green and already offers surprisingly good matcha experiences, provided you know where to look. The matcha scene in the city is clearly expanding, but the quality is still not consistent. While some places treat this ancient tea with the respect it deserves, paying attention to its origin, water temperature, and foam texture, others continue to see it only as hype with vibrant colors.
Whether you're a matcha fan or just taking your first steps into this world, we hope this guide helps you find true moments of green pleasure in Porto.
Our recommendation is simple: start with the favorites we've highlighted, don't be afraid to ask about the tea's origin, and follow your palate.
After all, life is too short to drink poor-quality matcha.
Until then, enjoy your sips, make good discoveries, and perhaps find a new favorite spot waiting to be discovered.
